The Well News Named Finalist in DC SPJ Dateline Contest
WASHINGTON — The Well News has been named a finalist in two categories of this year’s Dateline Awards from the D.C. Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Each year, the D.C. Chapter honors excellence in journalism by print, digital and broadcast journalists in the greater D.C. metropolitan area, including Northern Virginia and Maryland.
This year, The Well News is a finalist in the Online Breaking News category for its coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the landmark decision in which the court held the U.S. Constitution does not confer a right to abortion.
The journalists who contributed to the coverage and who are up for the award are Dan McCue, Natalie McCormick, Eden Metzger, Madeline Hughes and Tom Ramstack.
The Well News is also a finalist in the Online Features category for “When Swing was King at the Embassy,” a historical feature looking back at when Ahmet Ertegün and his older brother Nesühi, later founders of Atlantic Records, hosted jazz concerts at the Turkish Embassy during the years when their father, Mehmet Münir Ertegün, was Turkey’s ambassador to the United States.
The writer was Dan McCue.
To be considered for a Dateline award, journalists can submit their work in seven divisions — daily newspapers, weekly newspapers, magazines, television, radio, newsletter/trade publications, and online publications — which are then broken down into 18 smaller categories, from breaking news to features, commentary, photography and design.
Honorees will be recognized at the annual Dateline Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner, which will be held on June 13 at the National Press Club.
The tickets are available through Eventbrite by accessing the RSVP here.
This is the second year in a row The Well News has been recognized as a Dateline Awards finalist. Last year, it was honored with an award in the beat reporting category for its Supreme Court coverage.
