New Wall Street Journal/NBC News Poll Finds Majority Support Impeachment Probe
WASHINGTON – A poll just out Tuesday finds 55% of Americans believe President Donald Trump’s actions regarding Ukraine are a serious matter and merit an impeachment inquiry by Congress, while 39% don’t think so.
Meanwhile, when asked about the eventual outcome of the probe, 43% said Congress should push Trump from office, while 49% said they shouldn’t do so, based on what the public knows now.
The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll suggests that the public is following House Democrats’ investigation but isn’t yet convinced that Trump should lose his job over accusations that he misused his office by pressuring Ukraine to investigate a political rival, former Vice President Joe Biden.
Fifty-five percent of poll participants said Congress was right to take up the Ukraine matter, with 31% supporting the House impeachment inquiry that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi launched last month and an additional 24% saying they believe the House already has enough evidence to remove Trump from office.
By contrast, 39% said Congress shouldn’t hold an impeachment inquiry and should allow Trump to finish his term as president.
The results are particularly telling when compared to polls conducted during Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Over the course of the two-year investigation, The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll consistently found that 50 percent believed Trump’s removal by impeachment was unwarranted.
Presented in a separate question with just two options: impeaching Trump and removing him from office, or doing neither, 43% of survey participants said lawmakers should push Trump from office, while 49% said they shouldn’t do so, based on what the public knows now.
The Journal/NBC News poll interviewed 800 adults from Oct. 4-6. The margin of error is plus or minus 3.46 percentage points.
