Maryland Man, Drunk, Armed With Glock, Arrested Near Capitol
WASHINGTON — A 31-year-old Maryland man who had been drinking and who was armed with a Glock handgun was arrested early this morning within blocks of the House congressional office buildings on Capitol Hill, the U.S. Capitol Police announced.
The arrest of Angelo Day marked the 22nd gun-related arrest the Capitol Police have made this year.
He has been charged with carrying a pistol without a license, possession of an unregistered firearm, possession of unregistered ammunition and possession of a high-capacity magazine.
According to a release from the department, a Capitol Police officer saw a Blue Honda Accord stopped in a crosswalk in the 500 block of South Capitol Street, SW, at about 3 a.m. Tuesday morning, and watched as it remained stopped through multiple traffic light cycles without moving.
The officer then approached the car and discovered the driver was asleep. Once he woke the driver, the officer determined the individual was under the influence of alcohol.
During the DUI arrest, a Glock handgun was recovered from the car, as well as four partially loaded magazines — a drum magazine, a high-capacity, 33-round magazine, and two 10-round magazines.
“This is just another example of the great police and protective work our entire department does to keep our stakeholders and the Capitol Hill community safe,” said U.S. Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger in a written statement.
“All weapons are prohibited from Capitol Grounds. Even if you have a gun that is legally registered in another state, or the District of Columbia, it is still illegal around here,” he said.
This year’s pace of firearm arrests near the Capitol seems to be ahead of last year. In 2022, the U.S. Capitol Police made a total of 24 firearm-related arrests.
