Sen. Joe Manchin’s Wife Hospitalized After Car Accident
WASHINGTON — Gayle Manchin, federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission and wife of Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.V., was hospitalized Monday following a car accident in Birmingham, Alabama.
According to a statement released by the senator’s office, Manchin and a colleague, Guy Land, had traveled to Birmingham for a commission grant workshop, and were traveling between the airport and a hotel when the accident occurred.
“Both were admitted to UAB Hospital and are receiving excellent care,” the statement said. “She remains in stable condition but will stay there for a couple of days for precautionary measures.
“We want to thank the first responders who answered the call and were first on-site to provide assistance and support,” Manchin’s office added.
A spokeswoman for the commission said Manchin and Land’s injuries were caused by another vehicle hitting their car and that both were immediately transported to a nearby University of Alabama-Birmingham medical facility.
Neither statement offered any specifics about their injuries.
The Appalachian Regional Commission is a federal–state partnership authorized by Congress that works with the people of Appalachia to create opportunities for self-sustaining economic development and improved quality of life.
The Appalachian region comprises 423 counties across 13 states and spans 206,000 square miles, from southern New York to northern Mississippi.
The region’s 26.3 million residents live in parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia and all of West Virginia.
