AARHUS, Denmark — Danish wind energy manufacturer Vestas Wind Systems has received an order to supply wind turbines for what project developers are calling the largest wind farm ever constructed in the Western Hemisphere.

Pattern Energy Group, the company behind the project, SunZia Wind, recently closed $11 billion in financing for the project and companion initiative SunZia Transmission.

Together, Pattern Energy said in release, the two efforts represent the largest clean energy infrastructure projects ever undertaken in the United States.

The wind farm, which will eventually have a capacity to produce 3,515 MW of clean energy, is being built on land that passes through Torrance, Lincoln and San Miguel counties in New Mexico.

Vestas will supply 242 wind turbines with a total capacity of 1,089 MW. The contract with Pattern Energy includes building and erecting the turbines, as well as a 10-year service agreement.

Delivery of the turbines is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2025, with final commissioning scheduled for the first half of 2026.

While the wind farm is under construction, Pattern Energy will also be laying a 550-mile ± 525 kV high-voltage direct current transmission line between central New Mexico and south-central Arizona with the capacity to transport 3,000 MW of clean, reliable, and affordable electricity across Western states.
