Ashley Judd to Talk Privacy, Reporting on Suicide at National Press Club
WASHINGTON — Actor and social justice advocate Ashley Judd will speak at the National Press Club on Tuesday, May 9, on the current state of privacy law and the need for more responsible and respectful reporting on suicides.
Judd’s mother, the Grammy award-winning country music artist Naomi Judd, suffered for years after being diagnosed with treatment-resistant severe depression and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on April 30, 2022.
Afterwards, Ashley Judd wrote in The New York Times that “the trauma of discovering and then holding her laboring body haunts my nights.”
She continued: “As my family and I continue to mourn our loss, the rampant and cruel misinformation that has spread about her death, and about our relationships with her, stalks my days.”
Judd, who is appearing at the Press Club as part of its Headliners Luncheon series, will discuss her family’s experience, how reporters can report more responsibly on suicide, and the need for more robust privacy laws.
This will actually be Judd’s third appearance at the National Press Club. Her most recent visit to the club was in June 2010, when she spoke about mountaintop removal coal mining in Appalachia.
Tuesday’s events will begin with a lunch in the Club ballroom beginning at 12:30 p.m., with Judd scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. with a question and answer session to follow.
