Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Fresh Basil
ATLANTA — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday issued a food safety alert regarding Infinite Herbs organic basil. As of the alert, 12 Salmonella cases in seven states have been reported. There are no reported deaths.
The basil was sold at Trader Joe’s in 29 states and Washington, D.C., in 2.5 oz clamshell-style containers. Trader Joe’s has removed the product from its shelves and is no longer receiving delivery of the basil.
Investigators are currently looking for other potentially contaminated products.
The CDC advises consumers to toss out any Infinite Herbs organic basil purchased from Trader Joe’s or return it to the store, and wipe down and sterilize any surfaces the product may have touched including cutting boards, counters and refrigerator shelves.
If you have unmarked storage containers with basil stored inside and you are unsure of the brand, be safe and throw the product away.
The most common symptoms of Salmonella are diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually start six hours to six days after swallowing the bacteria, and last between four and seven days with most people recovering without treatment.
Children under 5, adults over 65 and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for severe illness.
