Communities Offer Ways to Let Out Pandemic Frustrations Through ‘Scream Nights’
Across the country, a number of community leaders have started hosting scream nights, unconventional gatherings where people convene and scream out all their pent-up pandemic emotions.
Last Saturday, Duke Memorial United Methodist Church in North Carolina hosted a scream night during which members of the community were encouraged to come to the front lawn of the Duke Memorial UMC and scream out all the hurt, rage, anxiety and fear they are feeling.
In January, a group of moms from Boston, Massachusetts, led their second scream event, the first of which occurred in March 2021. The January event included 20 or more mothers gathered in a circle on a frigid night in the middle of a field at Charlestown High School, where they took a deep breath and began screaming at the top of their lungs.
In December 2021, Harvard University also held an annual primal scream with students gathering at Harvard Yard at the stroke of midnight to let out a shout — a tradition stemming back to 1995.
