Majority Leader Releases House Election Year Schedule
Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La.

WASHINGTON — House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., has released the House calendar for the 2024 election year, a plan that calls for lawmakers to spend 28 workweeks in Washington, and optimistically has them breaking for the election season on Friday, Sept. 27.

The calendar, released Tuesday, has the first district work period for members scheduled for the week of Jan. 22, which potentially could coincide with the next government funding deadline, depending on the timeframe set forth in the next continuing resolution.

The members’ next break — for two weeks — is scheduled to begin on Presidents Day.

Owing to the fact Easter Sunday comes early next year, on March 31, with Passover following weeks later, the calendar includes two two-week breaks for the religious observances.

The first will begin March 25 and extend through April 8. The second two-week break will begin April 19 and extend through April 26.

As is always the case during a presidential election year, the House will also be out of session for the parties’ political conventions.

The Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is July 15-18. As a result, lawmakers will convene in Washington for government business for one week following the Fourth of July break.

The Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, is Aug. 19-22. which means it falls during the regularly scheduled August recess.

As for the scheduled break at the end of September, the calendar suggests Scalise is confident there won’t be a threat of a government shutdown as the end of the fiscal year approaches next year.

The calendar comes to an end with the post-election lame duck session, which is set to begin on Tuesday, Nov. 12, the day after the Veterans Day holiday.
