What’s Happening Thursday on Capitol Hill

The National Cannabis Policy Summit will present “the Congressional Forum” Thursday inside the Capitol Visitor’s Center.

In the words of the sponsors: “The forum invites lead sponsors of the frontline legislation being discussed and debated by lawmakers, to gather and lay out their visions for working to accomplish reform efforts.”

Expected speakers include Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Sen. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo., and Reps. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., David Joyce, R-Ohio, Barbara Lee, D-Calif., Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Brian Mast, R-Fla.

Senate Hearings

The Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions will consider the nomination of Julie Su to be the nation’s next secretary of Labor.

Having served as deputy secretary of Labor since 2021, Su was nominated by President Joe Biden after Secretary Marty Walsh stood down to become the executive director of the National Hockey League Players’ Association.

The hearing is being held in the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee will hold a hearing on the Government Accounting Office’s “High Risk List” and its recommendations for reducing waste, fraud and abuse.

U.S. Comptroller General Gene Dodaro will testify in room 562 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

The Senate Aging Committee has a hearing on “Dismantling Barriers and Building Economic Resilience for Older Workers” in room 106 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

Scheduled to speak are New York University Center for Health and Aging Innovation Director Dr. Ernest Gonzales; George Mason University Mercatus Center Senior Research Fellow Dr. Liya Palagashvili; Michigan Region IV Area Agency on Aging CEO Christine Vanlandingham; and Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees District 10 board member Dave McLimans.

The Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry subcommittee will hold a hearing on conservation in the farm bill.

The session, entitled “Conservation in the Farm Bill: Making Conservation Programs Work for Farmers and Ranchers,” is being held in room 328A of the Russell Senate Office Building.

Those testifying before the committee are Reeder Creek Ranch rancher and owner Paul Bruchez; Flickner Farms farmer and owner Ray Flickner; La Merced de San Antonio del Embudo Land Grant Vice President Joseluis Ortiz y Muniz; Rutledge Farms partner Jeff Rutledge; and Trout Unlimited’s Dr. Sara Porterfield.

House Hearings

The House Administration subcommittee is holding a hearing in the Longworth House Office Building on “American Confidence in Elections: Ensuring Every Eligible and Interested American Has the Opportunity to Vote — and for Their Ballot to Count According to Law.”

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg testifies to the House Appropriations subcommittee on budget about the department’s fiscal year 2024 funding request.
