Virginia’s Office of Vital Records Temporarily Scales Back Operations
Officials from the Virginia Department of Health announced in a recent statement that the Office of Vital Records is experiencing a shortage of workers because of a surge in COVID-19 infections, and the use of live operators in call centers will be suspended from Jan. 7-14.
“During this time, when residents call this line, they will be given information about accessing services through the OVR website and information about current processing times for certified vital records requests mailed to the office,” says the press release from the VDH.
The OVR is the only office in the state that provides Virginia residents with certificates for birth, death, marriage or divorce, and the office partners with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and local health districts to provide access to certified records at those locations.
The office’s decision to suspend services during this time comes after a 20%-30% increase in the shortage of workers in the past two weeks due to COVID-19 cases.
