Rep. Stephanie Murphy Named ‘Fiscal Hero’ As Group Lauds Her Bipartisan Leadership in Congress

WASHINGTON – Rep. Stephanie Murphy, D-Fla., a tireless advocate for fiscal responsibility whether on her own or as co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition of House Democrats, has been awarded the 2020 Fiscal Hero award by the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget.

Each year, the Campaign to Fix the Debt, a project of the committee, recognizes the important efforts of members of Congress to improve the nation’s fiscal situation.

Lawmakers who earn the Fiscal Hero designation distinguish themselves from their peers by casting fiscally responsible votes, taking the lead on bipartisan policy efforts, and engaging and educating their constituents on the importance of addressing the national debt.

“With the national debt poised to exceed the size of the U.S. economy, Fiscal Heroes like Rep. Murphy stand out in their efforts to draw attention to this crisis and find solutions to our fiscal challenges,” said Maya MacGuineas, president of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget and head of Fix the Debt.

“As a leader of the Blue Dog Coalition, Rep. Murphy has made fiscal responsibility a focus to do the right thing on behalf of her constituents and the nation. She has fought for PAYGO at a time when some lawmakers want to shirk their responsibility and avoid these hard but necessary choices,” MacGuineas said.

“I’m incredibly grateful to receive this Fiscal Hero award,” Murphy said. “Since coming to Congress, and now as leader of the Blue Dog Coalition, I have made fiscal responsibility one of my top priorities, introducing a balanced budget amendment, fighting to protect pay-as-you-go rules, and voting against fiscally irresponsible policies in times of economic expansion.

“Today’s tumultuous times demonstrate just how important fiscal responsibility is in times of prosperity because it strengthens our ability to respond in times of crisis,” she continued. “Once we get through this pandemic, I will keep working with both Democrats and Republicans to return our nation to solid financial footing and reduce our debt.”

In a letter to the representative informing her of her selection, MacGuineas said legislators like Murphy understand that improving the nation’s fiscal situation is a crucial component of a comprehensive economic plan.

“We need political leadership to fix the debt,” MacGuineas said Tuesday. “We’re grateful to recognize Rep. Murphy for taking this problem seriously and making this issue a priority.”
