Texas Utility Secures $15M Grant to Expand EV Charging Infrastructure
AUSTIN, Texas — Austin Energy, a community-owned, not-for-profit utility of Austin, Texas, has received a $15 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation through the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Program.
With an additional $3.75 million in local matching funds, the total investment reached $18.75 million, laying the groundwork for impactful project design and deployment over the next five years.
This initiative represents a significant step toward creating an electrified transportation system that is accessible, equitable, affordable and reliable. It will provide essential EV charging infrastructure in underserved areas, bridging critical gaps and benefiting historically underinvested neighborhoods.
The project plans involve installing a mix of Direct Current Fast Charger ports and Level 2 charging ports across various locations in Austin. These intended sites will increase charging access to multifamily housing, community centers, public schools, higher education institutions and other essential public facilities. Central to this mission is the commitment to overcoming barriers to clean and affordable transportation.
Key objectives of the project include:
- Reducing transportation costs for residents.
- Providing reliable, clean transit options for daily travel.
- Enhancing access to multimodal hubs and last-mile solutions in historically underserved areas, such as Austin’s east side, which has faced enduring inequities since the 1928 Austin Master Plan.
- Supporting workforce development and job quality through education, training and meaningful community engagement.
“The project aligns with Austin Energy’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, addressing transportation barriers and creating pathways to economic opportunity,” the company said in a press release.
“It also supports the city’s ambitious sustainability goals and reinforces Austin’s leadership in transportation electrification.”
