Leaked Draft on Roe v. Wade Ignites Protests

WASHINGTON — Hundreds of protestors gathered outside the Supreme Court Tuesday morning after Politico published a leaked draft of a Supreme Court opinion that would roll back Roe v. Wade nearly 50 years after the landmark decision solidified a woman’s right to an abortion.
Many people in the crowd, like Deborah Jackson, 57, who is from the area hoped “my boss won’t mind.”
“I personally cannot believe we are still doing this,” she said standing in front of the court.
This was her first protest but, “If I don’t show up, who will?” she asked.
Most of the protestors outside the court sided with Jackson, but there were a few celebrating the decision.
Jocabed Torres, 25, of California had flown in with an anti-abortion group Monday night for another protest, but saw the draft copy of the court’s decision on Twitter. She and her group came to the court to show their support for the draft opinion from February, which has yet to be solidified.
“We are really happy with the decision, but it is not enough,” Torres said. “It is not enough. We need a federal law banning abortion. But this is a start.”
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., joined the pro-abortion rights advocates, rallying them and ending her speech chanting, “We are not going back.”
Other Democrats, including Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., were expected to come to the court Tuesday afternoon.
