Rep. Stephanie Murphy Fights for Veterans’ Disability Benefits
New Ad Reflects Florida Representative’s Work on Behalf of Veterans
Throughout her first term in Congress, Florida Representative Stephanie Murphy has been quietly working to secure disability benefits owed to veterans and their families. Murphy’s office says they have handled 1,200 cases to help constituents recover earned benefits since she took office in 2017.
Just last year Todd Ulrich, a consumer investigator with local ABC affiliate WFTV Action 9, was contacted by Navy veteran John Lewis. Lewis claimed that, despite a court having granted him benefits after suffering an injury as a teenager that left him with permanently damaged lungs, the Department of Veterans Affairs refused to pay the $90,000 settlement he was owed.
Hearing Lewis’ story, Ulrich contacted Representative Murphy, who went to work to get the Navy veteran the benefits he had earned. “He was caught up in the red tape that exists with federal agencies,” Murphy told WFTV. Adding, “We work alongside them to make sure they receive what they have earned.”
Earlier this year, the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bipartisan measure co-led by Murphy and Florida Republican Representative Brian Mast to help disabled military veterans transition to the civilian workforce.
“As a nation, it’s our responsibility to help our servicemembers succeed, whether on the battlefield or in the workforce,” said Murphy. “America’s armed forces produce some of the most talented, well-trained, and tenacious individuals in the world, but too many of these warriors struggle to transition to civilian life. I’m proud to introduce bipartisan legislation to better prepare our servicemembers to succeed in whatever civilian career they pursue following their military service.”
Murphy also introduced bipartisan legislation to help the more than 200,000 servicemembers who leave the military each year successfully transition to civilian life and provide for their families. The Better Access to Technical Training, Learning, and Entrepreneurship (BATTLE) for Servicemembers Act will better prepare departing servicemembers to attend college, learn a technical trade, or start a small business.
