Reseachers at the University of Virginia are looking for postmenopausal women to participate in a clinical trial looking at how exercise and beets may improve blood vessel health.

The UVA Exercise Physiology Laboratory in the Department of Kinesiology seeks females aged 45-65 who are postmenopausal for a research study.

The purpose of the study is to determine how exercise and inorganic nitrate delivered in beetroot juice affect risk factors for cardiovascular diseases.

Individuals may be eligible for this study if:

  • They have not had a menstrual cycle in at least one year.
  • They did not have any type of surgical procedure that may have impacted natural menopause (i.e., hysterectomy).
  • They are not on hormone replacement therapy.
  • They do not exercise more than three times per week regularly.

This study involves drinking beetroot juice (either with or without inorganic nitrate), doing moderate to highly strenuous exercise bouts on a stationary bicycle, blood draws, ultrasound and vascular measurements, and an X-ray to determine body fat percentage.

There are four visits spread out by at least 48 hours, each visit lasting up to 3.5 hours. All study-related tests and procedures are provided free of charge. Participants may receive compensation of up to $200.

Arthur Weltman is the principal investigator and the UVA tracking # is HSR210326.
