$10.6M Available for Research on Floating Offshore Wind Tech

WASHINGTON — The National Offshore Research and Development Consortium is soliciting proposals to compete for a share in $10.6 million in funding aimed at driving advances in floating offshore wind technology.
A webinar on the funding opportunity has been scheduled for Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. ET.
The deadline for proposal submissions is Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. ET.
Established in 2018, the consortium is a not-for-profit public-private partnership focused, its website says, “on advancing offshore wind technology through high-impact research projects and cost-effective and responsible development to maximize economic benefits.”
Thursday’s announcement is the latest in a series of competitive solicitations to bring those goals to fruition.
Its so-called “Solicitation 4.0” aims to address near-term challenges in the U.S. offshore wind sector with high-impact projects targeting technological, environmental, and cost barriers to accelerate the deployment of floating offshore wind.
The solicitation identifies three “topic areas” that are of particular interest to the funders:
Topic Area 1: Innovations in Ports and Vessels to Support Floating Offshore Wind Installation.
Topic Area 2: Floating Offshore Wind Transmission Technology Advancement, and
Topic Area 3: Uncrewed Underwater Vehicles for Environmental Monitoring around Floating Offshore Wind Infrastructure.
“Collectively, successful projects will contribute to the United States’ wind energy and broader climate goals, including the goals of the Floating Offshore Wind Shot to drive U.S. leadership in floating offshore wind design, development, and manufacturing,” the solicitation said.
The opportunity is jointly funded by the Department of Energy’s Wind Energy Technologies Office, the California Energy Commission, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
