New Democrat Coalition: A Future That Works

September 12, 2018 by TWN Staff

As the number of legislative days this Congress dwindles, the New Democrat Coalition, a group of 68 Democrats in the House of Representatives who are committed to pro-economic growth, pro-innovation, and fiscally responsible policies, continue to push their “New Economic Opportunity Agenda: A Future that Works.”

As we look forward to hearing more from the coalition about their upcoming policy priorities, The Well News takes a look back at the group’s principles for expanding opportunities in the changing economy:

  • Give every American access to the tools to succeed in the 21st century economy
  • Remove obstacles for Americans to access middle-skill jobs and close the opportunity gap
  • Create a culture of lifelong learning and make it easier for workers to invest in their future

“As wage growth stagnates and traditional jobs change or disappear, prosperity seems to recede from an ever-growing number of American workers,”said New Democrat Coalition Chair Himes. “We believe that the enactment of these policies and others like them is necessary to achieve broadly-shared economic prosperity and to rebuild the social and political stability eroded by kitchen table economic anxiety. Addressing the unique economic challenges of today and tomorrow must be the next progressive advance.”

The New Democrat Coalition established the Future of Work Task Force, which is co-chaired by Reps. Bill Foster, Seth Moulton, and Jared Polis. Over the past year, the Task Force has convened forums on Capitol Hill to discuss the challenges that workers across America face today. This policy plan has resulted from the multiple forums and meetings with companies, labor unions, local organizations, and thought leaders over the last several months. New Democrat Coalition Members are focused on finding policy solutions to address the opportunities and challenges related to the evolving nature of work in the changing economy.
