New Study Shows There Are No Cures for an Alcohol Hangover
A team of British researchers recently found there are no real hangover cures. Their findings followed a systematic review of numerous remedies that claim to be effective at curing a hangover from alcohol, such as red ginseng, Korean pear juice and clove extract.
Researchers from King’s College London and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust published the findings in the scientific journal Addiction after assessing data from 21 randomized, placebo-controlled trials.
Their findings showed that all the studies were limited in reporting and not rigorous enough in their methods. The studies also differed in the type of alcohol given and whether it was given with food or not. Women were also underrepresented in the trials, as eight out of 21 of the studies involved only male participants.
Any study that showed a substance was able to improve a hangover had very low quality evidence, imprecise measurements and limitations, and no two studies ever overlapped on a similar hangover remedy.
According to a statement by lead author Emmert Roberts, “For now, the surest way of preventing hangover symptoms is to abstain from alcohol or drink in moderation.”
