Bloomberg and Trump Campaigns Dish Out $10 Million Each on Super Bowl Ads

A couple of ultrawealthy New Yorkers are trying to turn the 2020 campaign into an expensive game of political football.
The Trump and Bloomberg campaigns announced Tuesday they’re dishing out $10 million each on 60-second ads to be aired at next month’s Super Bowl.
Michael Frazier, a spokesman for Michael Bloomberg’s campaign, acknowledged the billionaire ex-New York mayor decided to purchase the ad for the nationally televised Feb. 2 game after learning President Donald Trump’s reelection bid was angling to do the same.
“When the Trump campaign decided to run an ad during the big game, the Bloomberg campaign responded by buying a spot. Mike is taking the fight to Trump,” Frazier said.
Market rate for ads at the must-see game go for roughly $5 million per 30 seconds.
A Trump campaign spokeswoman told the Daily News that the president’s team kicked off talks with Fox about airing a Super Bowl ad in the fall. The spot was locked in last month, she said.
However, the Trump campaign didn’t announce the ad until after The New York Times first reported Bloomberg’s spending spree on Tuesday afternoon.
“Super Bowl ad is an indicator that the Trump campaign is ramping up as 2020 begins,” Trump campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh tweeted. “The president’s record and unprecedented fundraising make this possible.”
The Trump campaign entered 2020 with a war chest of more than $600 million, accounting for the cash hauled in by the Republican National Committee.
Bloomberg, meanwhile, is mostly self-funding his long-shot Democratic campaign, using the fortune he made as a New York businessman.
He has already spent more than $100 million on 2020 ads — a staggering sum, considering he entered the race late and isn’t close to catching up with any of the Democratic front-runners in most polls.
