Details for Harry Reid Honors Announced
WASHINGTON —The House and Senate Democratic leadership announced the details of ceremonies honoring former Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., at the Capitol on Thursday.
Reid, who capped a 30-year career in the Senate by rising to majority leader, will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda Thursday afternoon.
Reid, 82, died last Tuesday at his home in Henderson, Nevada, after battling pancreatic cancer. A memorial service was held on Saturday in Las Vegas.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance at the Capitol ceremony will be limited to invited guests only.
According to the schedule, a ceremonial arrival for Reid will occur at about 10:30 a.m. At that time, an honor guard will carry his remains up the East Center Steps of the Capitol and into the Rotunda.
Between 11 a.m. and noon, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other members will participate in a “congressional tribute” to Reid.
Afterwards, between 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., members of Congress will be able to pay their respects during a viewing period.
A ceremonial departure for Reid will take place on the East Center Steps at 5 p.m. Plans for his burial have not been released.
Reid leaves behind a wife of 62 years, five children, 19 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
