Yamiche Alcindor Joining NBC News as Washington Correspondent
WASHINGTON —Yamiche Alcindor, known to most for her work as White House Correspondent of “PBS Newshour” and moderator of the Public Broadcasting Service’s “Washington Week” program, is joining NBC News’ Washington team.
In an internal memo provided to The Well News, Ken Strickland, NBC News Senior Vice President and Washington Bureau Chief says Alcindor will be joining the bureau in March “as a Washington correspondent covering the Biden administration, the impact of federal policies on communities across the country, and issues at the intersection of race, culture and politics.”
As a result, she’ll be giving up her duties on “NewsHour,” but will continue to serve in her current role on “Washington Week.”
In a tweet on Tuesday, Alcindor said “I am so excited to join NBC and MSNBC as a Washington correspondent. This feels like coming home to family. Covering the White House for “NewsHour” has been an honor.”
Alcindor is no stranger to NBC News viewers. She has been making appearances on MSNBC since 2013, and was named a political contributor to NBC News and MSNBC in 2016, providing insight and analysis on a number of programs including “Meet the Press with Chuck Todd,” “Morning Joe,” “Deadline: White House,” and “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”
Alcindor’s career move is just the latest example of what appears to be a trend of journalists working for multiple outlets at once in D.C.
Jonathan Capehart, an opinion columnist at The Washington Post, is now a weekend anchor at MSNBC, and Jonathan Lemire, the White House bureau chief for Politico, is now host of a new MSNBC early morning offering, “Way Too Early.”
Prior to “PBS NewsHour,” Alcindor had a distinguished run as a national political reporter at The New York Times, and a national reporter at USA Today.
She is a Society of Professional Journalism Fellow and her work has been recognized with the Radio Television Digital News Association’s John F. Hogan Distinguished Service Award, the Aldo Beckman Award for Overall Excellence in White House Coverage and the International Women’s Media Foundation’s Gwen Ifill Award.
She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and was named the organization’s Journalist of the Year last year.
Alcindor holds a bachelor’s degree in English, government and African American studies from Georgetown University and a master’s degree in broadcast news and documentary filmmaking from New York University.
