WASHINGTON — We all think of January as our “makeover” month. Diets start, exercise equipment gets an extra look and when the weather is good, walks get just a little bit longer.

Still, for most of us, dropping unwanted pounds remains a challenge. When your brain — or that hard to avoid pizza commercial — tells you you’re hungry, it’s hard to ignore its siren call.

But this month the good folks at AARP offer some hope — regardless of your age.

In a piece on its website entitled “Foods You Can Eat Without Gaining Weight,” the AARP’s Stephanie Watson points out that “many delicious (and healthy foods) can still be part of your dining repertoire.”

What’s more, Watson points out, “Some members of the produce family are so light in calories and fat that you can eat them with (relative) abandon.”

So what foods does AARP say will “never” make you fat?

The top 10 are listed below.

Celery

Lettuce

Watermelon

Broccoli and cauliflower

Grapefruit

Mushrooms

Berries (strawberries, blueberries, blackberries)

Kiwi

Carrots

Spinach and kale

Watson suggests anyone wanting to lose weight can indulge in these to their heart’s content, along with a balanced diet.

Her piece offers many more details, including how to make vegetables more appealing to non-veggie eaters.
