Former Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake, a Republican who backed President Joe Biden over his own party’s nominee, President Donald Trump in the 2020 election, is now Biden’s nominee to be the United States’ next ambassador to Turkey.

Flake is the second of Biden’s Republican endorsers to be rewarded with an ambassadorship.

Last month the president nominated Cindy McCain, the widow of the late Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to be ambassador to the United Nations food program.

Flake is currently a fellow at both Arizona State and Brigham Young Universities.

Prior to serving in the Senate, Flake was a member of the House, and over the course of his career on Capitol Hill, he served as a member of both the House Foreign Affairs Committee and Senate Foreign Relations Committees.

He was one of hundreds of Republicans who fled from the GOP’s standard-bearer last year and accused him of striving to destroy democracy.

Flake then went a step further and campaigned for Biden, urging Republicans as a very public example of bipartisanship, to put country over party and vote for Biden.

Flake left the Senate in 2018 after serving just one term, acknowledging that he would probably lose a bid for re-election to a primary challenger backed by Trump.
