Speaker Pelosi Invites Trump to Deliver State of the Union Feb. 4
WASHINGTON – House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Friday invited President Donald Trump to deliver his annual State of the Union address on Feb. 4.
In a letter that was short and to the point, Pelosi noted the Founding Fathers intended for the president “from time to time to give to the Congress information of the State of the Union.”
“In the spirit of respecting our Constitution, I invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, in the Chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives,” Pelosi wrote.
The letter comes two days after the House voted in the same chamber, and nearly along party lines, to impeach Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said the president has accepted Pelosi’s invitation.
In the meantime, Trump on Friday attacked a prominent Christian magazine a day after it published an editorial arguing that he should be removed from office because of his “blackened moral record.”
Trump responded in a tweet that the magazine, Christianity Today, which was founded by the late Rev. Billy Graham, “would rather have a Radical Left nonbeliever, who wants to take your religion & your guns, than Donald Trump as your President.”
The magazine “has been doing poorly and hasn’t been involved with the Billy Graham family for many years,” Trump wrote.
He later questioned whether the magazine was “looking for Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, or one of those of the socialist/communist bent, to guard their religion.
“How about Sleepy Joe? The fact is, no President has ever done what I have done for Evangelicals, or religion itself!” Trump added.
Rev. Franklin Graham, who now leads the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and prayed at Trump’s inauguration, tweeted Friday that his father would be “disappointed” in the magazine.
Graham added that he “felt it necessary” following the editorial to share that his father, who died last year after counseling several past presidents, voted for Trump.
The president thanked Graham for the disclosure.
