As new members of the House of Representatives take office, one of the first and most important decisions they make is the appointment of a chief of staff. The Well News is tracking all of these top hires.

The House met on Jan. 3 to vote for the speaker, but before new members could be sworn in, Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., hit a few bumps in the road. All Democrats in the chamber voted for Hakeem Jeffries, of New York, but a handful of Republicans voted for someone other than Johnson or did not respond when their names were called.

Fortunately for Johnson, the drama was short lived, and following some assurances, as well as a call from President-elect Donald Trump, the holdouts cast their votes for Johnson and he retained his gavel.
