Abu Dhabi Summit Gathers Climate Advocates in Advance of UAE’s COP28
ABU DHABI — World leaders, global CEOs and international sustainability advocates are set to gather in Abu Dhabi on Jan. 16 and 17 for Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week’s Summit, where they will discuss key sustainability issues for the coming year, including the upcoming COP28, transformative tech, food and energy security, and financing climate action.
ADSW, a global initiative established in 2008 by the UAE, aims to play a crucial role in driving momentum between COP27 and the upcoming COP28, which the UAE will host from Nov. 30 to Dec. 12, 2023.
Among those set to attend and speak will be H.E. Mariam bint Mohammed Al Mheiri, minister of Climate Change and Environment in the UAE; Simon Stiell, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change; and John Kerry, U.S. special presidential envoy for Climate; as well as representatives from Egypt, France, Germany and the Maldives.
A featured speaker at ADSW will be COP28 President-Designate, UAE Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology Dr. Sultan Al Jaber. Jaber further acts as chairman of Masdar, the UAE’s clean energy company and host of the ADSW Summit in 2023.
Masdar has been laying the groundwork for the Emirates’ expanded global energy capacity and green hydrogen production.
“More than ever, it is critical that the world’s leaders across business, government and civil society come together to address the most pressing issue of our time: climate change,” Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, chief executive officer for Masdar, said in a release.
One of the world’s largest sustainability events, the ADSW Summit attracted some 30,000 attendees from 150 different countries last year.
