WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden will host French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron for a state visit to the United States, which will include a state dinner, on Dec. 1, 2022.

The event marks the first state visit of the Biden-Harris administration.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement that the visit “will underscore the deep and enduring relationship between the United States and France, our oldest ally, that is founded on our shared democratic values, economic ties, and defense and security cooperation.”

A French official provided a statement to The Well News shortly afterwards that said, “At the invitation of U.S. President Joe Biden, President Macron will travel to Washington, DC, for a State Visit on December 1 and 2, 2022. It will include a state dinner on December 1.

“This visit will underscore the deep and enduring relationship between France and the United States, founded on our shared democratic values, economic ties, and defense and security cooperation,” the statement continued. “On the strength of the momentum created by their joint statement in Rome in October 2021 and in the wake of their meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on September 21, the two Presidents will discuss our continued partnership on shared global challenges and areas of bilateral interest.”

The meeting comes as Macron is to foster the creation of a new European alignment — tentatively called the European Political Community — which he hopes will bolster regional cooperation in the face of Russian aggression in Ukraine.

Macron first proposed the new grouping in May, saying it would be open to nations adhering to the core values of the European Union and would be an avenue for greater cooperation on matters like energy, security and infrastructure.
