Schumer Tests Positive for COVID-19
WASHINGTON — As Congress returns from its Fourth of July break, one familiar face won’t be making an appearance on Capitol Hill.
That’s because Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has tested positive for COVID-19.
In a statement released Sunday, Schumer spokesman Justin Goodman said the majority leader received the positive test result as part of his regular testing regimen.
“The leader is fully vaccinated and double boosted, and has very mild symptoms. He greatly appreciates the protection the vaccine has provided him and encourages everyone to test regularly and get vaccinated and boosted,” Goodman said.
Consistent with the CDC guidance, Schumer will quarantine this week and work remotely.
“Anyone who knows Schumer knows that even if he’s not physically in the Capitol, through virtual meetings and his trademark flip phone he will continue with his robust schedule and remain in near constant contact with his colleagues,” Goodman said.
“As we do every week, we will provide any updates to the Senate floor schedule as the week progresses,” he added.
Schumer’s positive test comes at the start of a hectic three-week period for Congressional Democrats.
Not only do they want to pass the USICA/CHIPS/America Competes Act before the summer break in August, they also want to see both the slimmed-down reconciliation package and the annual defense authorization act clear both chambers of Congress before they leave town..
