National Memorial Day Road Closures, Restrictions Announced

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Capitol Police have announced a series of road closures that will be in effect between Monday, May 16, and Thursday, June 2, to accommodate the National Memorial Day concert.

The concert itself will be broadcast live on PBS and streamed online on Sunday, May 29, from the West Front of the U.S. Capitol.

Performers at this year’s concert include Joe Mantegna, Gary Sinise, Jean Smart, Gil Birmingham, Dennis Haysbert, Lea Salonga, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Mary McCormack, Craig Morgan, Norm Lewis, Rhiannon Giddens, Pia Toscano, Jack Everly, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Military District of Washington, the U.S. Army Herald Trumpets, the U.S. Army Chorus, Army Voices, Army Band Downrange, the U.S. Navy Band Sea Chanters, the U.S. Air Force Singing Sergeants, and the Soldiers’ Chorus of the United States Army Field Band.

The concert venue itself is not open to the public as the Capitol complex continues its phased reopening; nevertheless, authorities do anticipate that traffic and parking will both be impacted before, during and after the event.

The road closures and related restrictions are as follows:

Tuesday, May 17, 2022

Road Closure

  • Until block of 1st Street, NW/SW between Peace Circle and Garfield Circle.
    • Two-way traffic available, the northbound curb lane closed to traffic.

Wednesday May 18, 2022 – Thursday, May 26, 2022, at 12:01 a.m.

Road Closure

  • Unit Block of 1st Street, NW/SW between Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and Maryland Avenue, SW will have the following restrictions:
    • One-way traffic northbound from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    • One-way traffic southbound from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Friday, May 27, 2022, at 12:01 a.m. to Monday, May 30, 2022, at 4:00 a.m.

Road Closures

  • 1st Street between Constitution Avenue, NW and Independence Avenue, SW.
  • Pennsylvania Avenue between 1st Street, NW and 3rd Street, NW.
  • Maryland Avenue between 1st Street, SW and 3rd Street, SW.

Parking Restrictions

  • Pennsylvania Avenue between 1st Street, NW and 3rd Street, NW for all areas.
  • Maryland Avenue between 1st Street, SW and 3rd Street, SW for all areas.
  • 1st Street between Constitution Avenue, NW and Independence Avenue, SW for all areas.
  • Note: 1st Street between Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and Maryland Avenue, SW will continue to be closed until approximately 6:00 p.m.

Traffic Restriction

  • Tour buses will not be able to access the normal drop locations and must relocate to alternate areas, to include:
    • Independence Avenue between 3rd Street, SW and 4th Street, SW.

Friday, May 27, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. through Monday, May 30, 2022, at 4:00 a.m.

Parking Restrictions

  • Independence Avenue between 1st Street and 2nd Street, SW, north curb only.
  • Washington Avenue between 1st Street, SW and Independence Avenue, SW, north curb only.
  • New Jersey Avenue between Constitution Avenue, NW and C Street, NW.
  • Note: These restricted areas will be reserved for concert support and staff parking with appropriate event placards.

Monday, May 30, 2022, at 6:00 p.m. to Thursday, June 2, 2022, at 7:00 p.m.

Road Closure

  • Unit Block of 1st Street, NW/SW between Pennsylvania Avenue, NW and Maryland Avenue, SW will have the following restrictions:
    • One-way traffic northbound from 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
    • One-way traffic southbound from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

All traffic impacts are expected to be lifted by Thursday, June 2, 2022, at 7:00 p.m.
