Democrat Cherfilus-McCormick Wins Florida’s 20th Congressional District Contest

FORT LAUDERDALE — Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick has won the election to represent Florida’s 20th Congressional District, replacing the late long-time Rep. Alcee Hastings.

As of 7:22 p.m. Tuesday night, Cherfilus-McCormick had garned 78% of the total 45,471 votes reported cast.

Republican Jason Mariner received 20.2% of the vote, followed by Libertarian Mike ter Maat, with 0.7%, and independents Jim Flynn and Leonard Serratore, who each received 0.5% of the vote.

Cherfilus-McCormick was heavily favored to win the heavily Democratic seat in Broward and Palm Beach Counties, after struggling in a primary contest she won by just five votes.

As of Tuesday evening, she was leading Mariner by 23,278 votes.
