Former Trump Advisor to Launch Social Media Platform July 4
WASHINGTON – Former top Trump advisor Jason Miller will launch GETTR, a new social media platform, on July 4, a launch date chosen to “symbolically declare independence from Big Tech,” according to a release from the company.
“There is a clear need for a new social media platform that truly defends free speech, is cancel free, and doesn’t de-platform people for their political beliefs,” said Miller, who will serve as GETTR’s chief executive officer.
“This is a challenge to social media monopolies. We want people of all political stripes to join GETTR, and we believe it will be a global platform – for more than just conservatives in the United States,” he said.
The name of the new platform is derived from the concept of “getting together” as a community, and the new company promises not to “de-platform users for their political opinions.”
A GETTR App is currently available in the App stores in a Beta version until Sunday’s official launch.
GETTR, which will verify accounts for certain users, is taking on social media monopolies and will feature:
- Ability to post longer messages – up to 777 characters.
- Sharper and clearer pictures than some other social media platforms.
- Ability to post longer videos – up to three minutes long.
- Video editing within the App, so users do not have to shuffle back and forth.
- Importation of existing Tweets to the new platform upon signup, so users’ “hard work, creativity and intellectual property comes with them.”
Additional features to be unveiled in the near future include:
- In-App “tipping” and online appreciation for content creators.
- Ability to donate to political campaigns.
- Live-streaming video.
“This is superior, cutting edge technology, better than anything else out there today,” Miller said. “Conservatives are tired of their alternative platforms being subpar, but GETTR blows everything out of the water and will be the envy of the social media world.”
According to the British Independent newspaper, the GETTR app previously existed as a Chinese-language social media network, mostly trafficking in content in opposition to the Chinese Communist Party.
That platform, which operated for over a year, is reported to have ties to exiled Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui, who is a known ally of former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon.
The Daily Beast has reported Miller received initial funding from a foundation owned by Guo and his family, Miller told the Independent Guo isn’t a “direct” investor and has no formal role in GETTR.
The big question, of course, is whether Trump himself is involved.
“The former president is going to make his own decision, it’s certainly there and ready for him should he make the decision – we would welcome that,” a person involved with the app told Politico.
They added: “There is an account reserved for him and waiting for him but that’s a decision for him to make.”
