CA-45: Katie Porter (D)
PROFILE
About Porter:
Porter is serving her first term representing California’s 45th Congressional District. She has spent nearly 20 years as a consumer protection attorney.
Before the housing bubble burst, Porter was one of the first to sound the alarm about Wall Street’s predatory practices targeting homeowners, winning recognition from The New York Times and others.
In 2012, then California Attorney General Kamala Harris appointed Porter to be California’s watchdog against the banks. The banks had promised to pay billions to homeowners and Harris appointed Porter to make sure the banks followed through. Porter and her team secured over $18 billion.
Porter has been a key player in the fight against abusive credit card fees and, in 2010, helped pass important federal credit card protections for families.
Porter is a mom to three children. They live in Irvine, where she is a long-time cubmaster. Porter is a tenured professor of law at University of California Irvine and teaches consumer law.
