MI-10: Lisa McClain (D)
PROFILE
About McClain:
Lisa McClain launched her campaign for Congress in October 2019 after a conversation around the dinner table with her family.
It was during that dinner that her daughter, Ryan, challenged her to do something about the problems she saw in politics.
McClain spent 11 years working within American Express before she and a group of other employees split off to start Hantz Financial, a financial advising firm based in Southfield, Mich. The business grew from zero clients to more than 700 employees.
Upon launching her campaign, McClain received support from other Hantz employees and invested $1.45 million of her own money in the effort.
But it was her hard work that enabled her to come out the victor in a competitive three-way primary with state Rep. Shane Hernandez and retired Brigadier General Doug Slocum.
McClain told the MIchigan Live website that she believes her background in business and economics is especially critical now as the country continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic.
She also advocates for loosening regulations so businesses can get back on their feet, and said she respects the need for caution about the coronavirus, “but I don’t live in fear of the coronavirus.”
“I think we have to take a look at letting government get out of the way and helping people get back to work,” she said in a recent interview. “The government needs to trust the people, that the people will do the right thing. And then the people need to be able to trust their government.”
