NM-02: Xochitl Torres Small (D)
PROFILE
About Torres Small:
Xochitl Torres Small grew up in Las Cruces, N.M. Torres Small watched her mom go to school early and stay long after the last bell rang to help her students succeed and saw her father go the extra mile as a social worker.
Torres Small took out loans to pay for college. To limit that debt, she took jobs tutoring, serving as a residential assistant at her university, and working to support women’s health and improve access to health care.
After college, Torres Small returned home to Las Cruces. As a field representative for Sen. Udall, she worked to increase cell phone service, broadband, and other communication lines in rural New Mexico. She worked with teachers, college instructors, and business leaders to create better job opportunities for local graduates. She also helped bring farmers, conservationists, and communities together to protect New Mexico’s water.
She also worked as a judicial law clerk for a federal judge, the Honorable Robert C. Brack.
Now, in Congress, working with both parties, Torres Small has led on supporting small businesses and growing the economy, fighting to increase access to health care close to home, and working to implement a strong, smart, and fair border security and immigration policy.
