About Tillis:
Thomas “Thom” Tillis is a member of the U.S. Senate representing North Carolina. His current term ends on January 3, 2021. Tillis is running for re-election to the U.S. Senate against Democratic challenger Cal Cunningham.
Originally born in Jacksonville, Fla., on August 30, 1960, Tillis earned his B.A. from the University of Maryland University College in 1997. After earning his B.A. Tillis worked in the private sector for 29 years in technology and management consulting.
His involvement in public service began by serving as the PTA president of his daughter’s high school and then he was elected for a two-year term as the Cornelius Town Commissioner.
Afterward, he represented District 98 in the North Carolina House of Representatives from 2007 to 2015. During that time, he served as the speaker of the house from 2011 to 2015. As speaker, he played a role in enacting job-creating policies and reforming North Carolina’s tax and regulatory codes.
After serving his time at the House of Representatives, Tillis was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2014. As a senator, Tillis serves on four Senate committees: Armed Services; Veterans’ Affairs; Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs; and the Committee on the Judiciary.
Currently, the senator lives with his wife Susan in Huntersville, N.C., and they are the parents of two grown children and two granddaughters.
