Kansas Latest State to Offer Online Food Purchases with EBT Card

TOPEKA, Kan. – Yesterday, the Kansas Department of Children and Families announced the state will officially allow food stamp recipients to purchase food online using a Kansas Benefits Card, or EBT Card, at retailers Amazon and Walmart.

In a press release, Kansas DCF Secretary Laura Howard said, “As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, this new online purchasing program offers a contactless, safe, and secure way for Kansans to get their groceries.”

The announcement of the EBT Online availability comes after Deomcratic Gov. Laura Kelly announced in June the US Department of Agriculture had approved of the DCF’s proposal to provide EBT Online for the people of Kansas.

When Kansans use an EBT card to get groceries online, the card functions like a debit card. Those using SNAP benefits will be able to buy groceries online that are permitted by the USDA with their EBT cards as long as they pay for the delivery.

Kansas is the latest state to partner with Amazon and Walmart to provide online grocery purchases for SNAP beneficiaries. Amazon and Walmart accept SNAP benefits as payment for groceries from most states in the country. SNAP benefits can also be used at retailers such as ShopRite and TheFreshGrocer in select states across the U.S.

For those seeking to buy groceries from Amazon, customers with SNAP need to add their SNAP EBT card to the site. Afterwards, SNAP recipients have the option to buy groceries from Amazon’s Marketplace, Amazon’s Pantry, or from Amazon Fresh.

For those Amazon customers with an EBT card or a Medicaid card, a 15% discount is available on qualifying food items. The discount deal for EBT and Medicaid cards lasts until September 30.

Walmart offers home delivery as well as grocery pick up in select states for SNAP beneficiaries.
