Trump Slams Absentee Voting and Claims Coronavirus ‘Will Go Away’
President Donald Trump slammed voting by mail as a “disaster” Wednesday just a day after urging his supporters to do just that in Florida.
Hours after admitting that absentee voting and vote by mail are the same thing, the president claimed that only Florida’s Republican-run government can be trusted to run elections mostly by mail.
“Absentee (voting) is OK because you have to go through a process,” Trump said in a rambling, hourlong morning appearance on his favorite morning show, “Fox & Friends.” “What we’re against is blanketing the state with ballots. Anyone who ever walked will get one.”
Trump blasted Nevada’s decision to send ballots to all registered voters, the same system that has been used in several states for many years.
Unaware that the New York City Board of Elections certified the primary results of the hotly contested Democratic race between Rep. Carolyn Maloney and Surah Patel late last night, Trump said, “It’s been 6 1/2 weeks (and) they have no idea what happened,” he said. “She’s in trouble, frankly, they have to do the election over.”
Trump also repeated his claim that coronavirus is ebbing and would be “way down” by Election Day.
“Some states are going up but most are coming down,” Trump said. “It’s going to be under control.”
Trump has repeatedly insisted that COVID-19 will “miraculously” disappear. The death toll is rising and at least 157,300 Americans have lost their lives.
“This thing is going away,” he said. “It will go away, like things do.”
Even as parents fret about whether their children’s schools can reopen safely, Trump asserted that “children are almost immune from the disease.” Public health experts say that kids can easily transmit the virus to parents, leading to fears opening schools could lead to new spikes.
“Children just don’t have a problem with it,” Trump said. “Children are almost — I would almost say definitely — but almost immune from this disease.”
