Utah Senate: John Curtis (R)
A former Democrat, John Curtis is generally considered a moderate Republican in the House of Representatives, in which he’s served since 2017.
Notably, he did not support former President Donald Trump during the primaries.
Prior to winning a special election to Congress — he’s since been reelected three more times — Curtis had been the mayor of Provo, Utah.
He’s now running for the Senate hoping the state voters recognize how he’s delivered for Utahns.
In the House, one of his big focuses has been on energy, and he is the founder of the Conservative Climate Caucus. He is also a member of the centrist Republican Governance Group.
His other priorities have been fighting reckless spending in both parties, standing up to communist China’s aggression, protecting farmers and ranchers from over-regulation and defending Utah’s land from the constant pressure of D.C.
Before being elected mayor of Provo in 2010, Curtis designed and built shooting ranges around the world for law enforcement training.
He has said this real world experience taught him what it’s like to successfully build something from the ground up and the challenges that come along with it.
While serving as mayor, he cut the city’s budget by more than 8%, and he says that shows he understands that running a leaner government is important, and he uses his experience as an example of how the federal budget should also operate.
And he points proudly to the fact that even with deep budget cuts, he left the mayor’s office with a 94% approval rating and the city rated as one of the best run cities in the country.
In Curtis’s spare time he enjoys water skiing, exercising, and adding to his extensive sock collection.
But he says his favorite thing to do is hang out with his wife of 41 years, Sue, and be “Papa” to his 17 grandchildren.
