Arizona Senate: Ruben Gallego (D)

The son of immigrants from Colombia and Mexico, Ruben Gallego grew up poor but eventually earned a spot at Harvard University, working at numerous odd jobs to pay his way through school.
After leaving school, Gallego enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and deployed as an infantryman to Iraq, where his company saw some of the heaviest casualties of the war.
Once he returned home, he got involved with local Democratic politics, managing the successful campaign of Phoenix City Council candidate Michael Nowakowski, for whom he later served as chief of staff.
Gallego left that position in 2009 to run for a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives. After his victory, he quickly rose through the ranks and by 2012 he was the chamber’s assistant minority leader.
Two years later, he resigned his state House seat to run for Congress. Initially elected to serve the voters of Arizona’s 7th Congressional District.. He has represented those in the 3rd Congressional District since 2023.
His current district includes most of southern, western, and downtown Phoenix, and part of Glendale.
Throughout his years in Congress, Gallego has fought to cut costs for working families, support small businesses, and take care of his fellow veterans.
Generally considered a progressive, Gallego has supported the Medicare for All Act, ending the Senate filibuster and cutting military spending.
He lives in South Phoenix with his wife Sydney, son Michael, and young daughter Isla.
