FL-20: Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D)
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick was born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, and nurtured by Broward County, Florida. She is the youngest of three children of Haitian immigrants who came to America fleeing a dictator.
Faith has been a consistent thread throughout her entire life; working her way through law school, building a successful health care business, becoming a community advocate and arriving in the halls of Congress, her faith has always been my center.
In the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, she led efforts to meet the immediate needs of the district. Through our partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Florida Department of Emergency Management), her company vaccinated over 300,000 and employed over 1,000.
Before joining forces with her husband, she was a single mother for twelve years. She raised her daughter alone while completing coursework working towards a master’s degree in Business Administration, and putting herself through law school while navigating her daughter’s learning disability. Today, her daughter is enrolled in honors pre-law, preparing to pursue a career in law.
She is a graduate of Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory, Howard University, and St. Thomas University School of Law.
