SC Senate: Jamie Harrison (D)
PROFILE
About Harrison:
The son of a single teenage mom, and raised by his grandparents in Orangeburg, S.C., Harrison overcame the challenges of poverty with the help of teachers and mentors who believed in him. From a mobile home to Yale University and Georgetown Law, he never forgot who he was or where he came from.
Harrison was able to earn a scholarship to Yale University and attend Georgetown Law. After college, Harrison returned to Orangeburg to teach at his old high school, then worked to help kids like him go to college. Harrison served as an aide to South Carolina Congressman James Clyburn, and then worked for some of the biggest employers in South Carolina, such as the Port of Charleston and the University of South Carolina.
In 2013, Harrison was elected the first African-American chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party, a position he held until 2017. Harrison and his wife Marie live in Columbia, S.C., where they raise their two young children.
Harrison is running for U.S. Senate to fight for opportunity for all South Carolinians, and he’s willing to work with anyone to do it.
Harrison believes that what you say matters — and that character counts.
