PROFILE
About Smith:
Tina Smith is the incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator for Minnesota.
Smith was born on March 4, 1958, in Albuquerque, N.M., and grew up in Santa Fe. In 1980, she graduated from Stanford University and in 1984, earned an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College.
She then moved to Minnesota to work at General Mills and raise a family with her husband, Archie. They’ve been married for more than 30 years and have two sons, Sam and Mason.
Smith eventually left General Mills to start her own small business, and later became involved in state and local government, serving as chief of staff for both Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak and Gov. Mark Dayton.
In 2014, Smith was elected Minnesota’s 48th Lieutenant Governor. As Lieutenant Governor, she has said, she traveled to every corner of the state to talk with, learn from, and work on behalf of Minnesotans.
Among the issues she’s been particularly active on is tax fairness. Today, she continues to work on issues she first began to tackle in state government, these include lowering health care costs and prescription drug prices, bolstering early childhood education programs and expanding rural broadband access.
