NY-24: Dana Balter (D)
Dana Balter is the third of four children and the granddaughter of Holocaust refugees.
Balter worked her way through college as a waitress and bartender and is still working to pay off her student loans.
Balter sought a career in disability services, where she started as a teacher and later became the director of education at a disability services non-profit. Through her work, she helped hundreds of clients and their families access the support and services they needed.
After years of working with clients and their families, she returned to school to study public administration. While in graduate school at Syracuse University, she suffered a serious injury and was forced to put her studies on hold for several years.
After recovering from her injury, she re-enrolled at Syracuse University and went on to teach at the university level, most recently teaching public policy and citizenship at her alma mater, SU’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
In 2018, Balter ran a grassroots campaign in New York’s 24th Congressional District but was defeated by John Katko.
