NC-06: Kathy Manning (D)
As a mom, attorney, and community leader, Kathy Manning has spent the last 30 years bringing people together to solve problems. Her father worked for Ford Motor Company for 40 years and her mom was a public school teacher.
After graduating from Harvard University and the University of Michigan Law School, Manning moved with her husband to his hometown of Greensboro, N.C., in 1987, where they have raised their three children. After serving as a partner at a major law firm for 15 years, she left to start her own small business.
Manning has held leadership positions within numerous organizations, including United Way, Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro, the National Conference for Community and Justice, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In her community and non-profit work, she worked to provide job retraining, mortgage assistance, food and healthcare for people thrown out of work by the Great Recession.
Manning helped spearhead the effort to build the Greensboro Children’s Museum, Triad Stage, and the new Tanger Center for the Performing Arts. She was also the first woman to lead one of the largest charitable, faith-based organizations in the world.
She is the recipient of various awards for her service to the community, including the 2014 Charles Duncan McIver Award given by the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to honor distinguished North Carolina public servants and the 2013 Jim Roach Downtown Person of the Year Award presented by Downtown Greensboro. She was inducted into the Junior Achievement Business Leader Hall of Fame in 2020.
