WASHINGTON – Former Vice President Joe Biden’s presidential campaign announced Monday that it raised $80.8 million in May, fueled by a daily virtual fundraising campaign the candidate and two committees associated with the Democratic Party perfected during the coronavirus pandemic.

In an email sent to supporters, the campaign said “even as the country faces crises surrounding the economy, public health and racial injustice, the campaign’s grassroots support has strengthened.”

According to the campaign, “More than half of donors in May were new and the number of online donors has tripled since February. In the last few weeks, more than 1.5 million new supporters have joined our campaign.”

“I’m humbled and honored that you have put your trust in me as your presumptive Democratic nominee,” Biden wrote to supporters as part of the release on the campaign’s May haul. “And I’m incredibly honored by the support I’ve received from you all.”

“Just a few months ago, people were ready to write this campaign off. Now, we are making huge dents in Donald Trump’s war chest. Every single dollar is going to make sure he is only a one-term president,” he said.

The May fundraising bonanza followed a strong April for the campaign, during which Biden supporters gave $60.5 million to support his presidential aspirations.

President Trump’s reelection campaign and the Republican National Committee have yet to release their contribution numbers for May. They did announce Monday that the president brought in a record $14 million on Sunday alone.

Sunday was Trump’s birthday and also the best day of online fundraising of his 2020 campaign, the committee said.

Sunday’s record significantly surpassed the RNC and Trump campaign’s previous daily best of $10 million in October 2016.
